History Of The Manse
The Free Church Manse was built in 1844. The Reverend James Winter lived at the manse and took over the ministry in 1891. He was engaged to Peter Pan creator J M Barrie’s sister Margaret. Just six months after he was ordained, and three weeks before the wedding, the Reverend James Winter was tragically killed after being thrown off his horse, which was gifted to him by the author to assist him with his ministerial work. J M Barrie was a friend of the late Reverend and returned to Bower for his funeral where he gave a eulogy. A transcript of the eulogy is held in the University of St Andrews.
